Acconeer’s A1 radar sensor in robot from large global Japanese consumer electronics company

The A1 radar sensor from Acconeer is used for presence and obstacle detection in a recently announced entertainment robot from one of Japan's largest electronics manufacturers providing high-end devices to consumers globally. The initial potential value of the launch is estimated to USD 150 000 annually for Acconeer, based on forecasts from the manufacturer. The product will initially be launched on the Japanese market.

Acconeer becomes direct customer of GlobalFoundries

Acconeer today announces agreement with GlobalFoundries that the two companies have agreed that Acconeer will become a direct customer of GlobalFoundries. Contract discussions will commence immediately and should be closed before end 2022. GlobalFoundries Inc. is one of the world's leading semiconductor contract manufacturing companies, where Acconeer produces their semiconductor wafers.

CEO Lars Lindell comments: "We have had a discussion with GlobalFoundries about how they can support Acconeer's rapidly growing demand and a conclusion from these discussions is that Acconeer should become a direct account. For Acconeer this means a deeper co-operation directly with GlobalFoundries as well as advantageous wafer prices and substantially improved payment terms which will reduce the working capital necessary for Acconeer's rapid growth."

Acconeer develops new smaller Entry Module targeting presence use case

After the success with XM132 Entry Module released last year, Acconeer now extends the Entry Module family with a smaller, lower priced version targeting the presence use case. The new module will be called Entry Module XM131 Presence and will be available on the market in Q1 2022.

Optimized for the presence use case, the Entry Module XM131 Presence will have a solderable design featuring the A111 radar sensor along with an ARM Cortex M0 microcontroller unit (MCU), working with 1.8V power supply. By only allowing 1.8V power supply the number of components is kept to a minimum, which enables a smaller form factor as well as a price set out to compete in a market segment traditionally dominated by technologies such as ultrasound or infrared sensors. In addition to lowering the price, reducing the number of components related to power regulation also minimizes environmental impact for customer products where 1.8V is already available in the system.

XM131 will come with a software specifically developed for the presence use case, which means that it will run a unique module server and have its own SDK. With a module and software specifically designed for presence applications a range of innovative use cases are enabled at a competitive price point. For example, XM131 can be used to detect people in a room or to trigger wake-up and lock functionality of devices. For customers who are interested in using the XM131, it is possible to already now start the evaluation based on XM132 in order to be ready for production soon after the launch of XM131 early next year. The new module will be available in tape-and-reel format, making it easy for customers to put it into mass produced products.

"Using Acconeer's new entry module XM131 opens up for a cost-efficient presence detection application, easy integration with optimized form factor. XM132 has been a great success and it will be exciting to see how the market receives the new entry module XM131" says Mikael Rosenhed, Head of Product Management.

The ARM Cortex M7-based XM112 High-Performance Module was released in December 2018, to let customers evaluate their use cases on an embedded system with high performance. In October 2019, the XM122 IoT Module was launched targeting connected battery-powered use cases, combining the A111 radar sensor with an ARM Cortex M4 MCU and integrated connectivity such as Bluetooth. The first module in the Entry family, XM132 was launched in September 2020 and has been very popular thanks to its integration-ready, solderable design.

Acconeer has sold more than half a million A1 radar sensors

As of today, Acconeer has sold more than 500 000 A1 radar sensors in total since the company started selling Evaluation Kits (EVKs) in February 2018.

Lars Lindell, CEO Acconeer, comments: "Today we ship our radar sensor number 500 000 since we started selling it online, and we are very happy to pass yet another milestone. I February 2020, 24 months after sales start, we reached 100 000 sensors sold and seven months later we passed 200 000. Now in less than a year we have sold an additional 300 000 radar sensors, despite a pandemic and global shortage of components which have slowed down our customers' production. We are now looking forward to passing the next milestone of having sold one million sensors."

Starting in 2021, Acconeer reports accumulated sales in financial reports, by the end of Q2 2021 the company had sold in total 440 000 radar sensors.

The radar technology company Acconeer AB has signed a distribution agreement with Japanese NEXTY Electronics. NEXTY, a core company of the Toyota Tsusho Group's electronics business, is a leading Japanese distributor with especially strong coverage of companies in the automotive sector.

Acconeer announces A121 pulsed coherent radar sensor, new high-performance product in A1 family

Today Acconeer is announcing a new product in the A1 pulsed coherent radar family, based on the design of A111 but with extended performance. The product is planned to be ready for mass-production in the second half of 2022.

The new product will complement the A111 radar sensor and will have even lower power-consumption, increased performance and improved data quality . This will be of use in advanced power-critical use cases such as gesture-control using micro-motions. The A121 will also have support for flexible power supply, with an IO interface of 1.8-3.3 V and will be qualified for AECQ-100 grade 2 to ensure operation over a wider temperature range. Being part of the A1 family, A121 is pin compatible with A111. More information about technical features and intended use cases will be shared closer to when the product is available on the market.

Acconeer launched the A111 radar sensor during the spring 2018, and the A1 product family will be complemented with A121 in second half of 2022. The next generation product family, A2, which is co-developed with Alps Alpine, will be launched in 2024 as previously announced.

Acconeer signs a distribution agreement with Mouser Electronics and receives first order

At the same time, Mouser Electronics places an order worth USD 35 000 for initial stock. The order relates to Acconeer's A1 radar sensor and related modules, evaluation kits (EVK) and lenses. Mouser is one of the largest electronic component distributors in the world, with a global reach.

Acconeer and Alps Alpine have signed a joint development agreement of Next-Generation Sensing Technology

Acconeer AB and Alps Alpine Co., Ltd. ("Alps Alpine") have signed a joint development agreement to develop next generation patented Pulse Coherent sensors, targeting a wide range of applications in the automotive, industrial and consumer segments including mobile phones. The contract is based on the principles in the MoU signed and announced in April 2020, and prescribes that Alps Alpine will contribute up to USD 6 million towards the development of which USD 3.85 million is paid as a Non Recurring Engineering fee and the balance will be invested in tools and third party IP. In return, Alps Alpine will receive exclusivity for the new product for the automotive market. The product is planned to be ready for production during 2024.

Payments are expected to commence in 2021 and end in 2024. Alps Alpine is a world-leading manufacturer of electronic components, modules and systems. Further information on Alps Alpine are set out at the bottom of this press release.
